How are website transactions processed?
When it comes to processing the transactions through your ecommerce system you have a variety of options, these include:
- Online Payment Gateway
We Recommend:

An online payment gateway will process your transactions in real-time. The transaction details are passed from your website to the online payment gateway via SSL encryption, the gateway then processes that transaction and sends back a response to your website (either accepted or declined). An Online payment gateway is the most secure way of processing online transactions providing you go with a reputable company.
Most companies provide a payment page as part of your payment gateway account, this is where the transaction is processed on their site instead of yours, the main advantage of this is that it avoids the need and cost for a SSL certificate on your website.
In most instances you do need a merchant facility from a bank to open an online payment gateway account.
Payment gateways charge a monthly or yearly fee plus a per-transaction fee, which all vary dependant on what gateway you choose.

Paypal
Paypal makes accepting payments online easy for everyone and is widely used all over the world. Anyone can open a paypal account and start accepting payments straight away.
All transactions are processed on the paypal website. A customised link is created on your website which transmits the details of the transaction to paypal, your customer then enters their credit card details on the paypal website and processes the transaction, and paypal sends your website back a response to whether the transaction has been successfully processed.
The funds are deposited into your Paypal account. You can then send the funds from your Paypal account to your bank account via logging into your account on the Paypal website.
