Magento 2 : Revolutionised Store Management

If you already run a Magento store, then the biggest change when migrating to Magento 2 is the store administration. As the old saying goes ‘change is as good as a holiday’ and with this one it’s one of the best holidays you’ll ever find. Here are some of the great administration improvements you can look forward to when you migrate to Magento 2. If you are new to Magento, then there has never been a better time to get onboard.

Redesigned User Interface

I’ve heard the design of the Magento UI called many things, mostly ‘clunky’ and ‘looks like it was designed by a developer’. I must admit, as a designer I would tend to agree. So the new UI with Magento 2 is one of the most welcomed features – it’s now a much more enjoyable user experience – and you can even use it on touch screen devices (hooray!)

Easier Navigation

As part making the UI more cross-device compatible you’ll now find the navigation on the left of your screen. It might take you some time to learn your way around as the overall structure is different, but not significantly. A bit of Magento 2 Training will get you working with it in no time.

Customisable Grids

I can see many of our clients popping the champagne cork on this one, with the introduction of customisable grids for Orders, Products & Customers. With orders & products in particular, in Magento 1.x, 99.9% of the time we had to customise these screens for greater efficiency. The best thing, is these screens also remember where you left off making your store administration more efficient than ever.

Order Grids

From the order screen you can now generate different views of your orders based different order values. Creating a customised view, involves 2 steps

1. Select the data that you want shown in the grid
2. Filter the data you want shown. For example, you might just want all orders displayed that are ready
3. Save the current view

Now you will have a permanent order grid of selecting orders that are ‘Processing’

Product Grids

Same logic applies in the product view, where you can select what data you want shown in the grid, and set-up customised views for different data that you want shown. BTW product thumbnails are now available in the grid by default.

Customer Grids

Same logic also applies for Customers, you can now create different views for customer groups, store views, geographic regions and more. It is possible for a Magento 2 Trained developer to add custom attributes to the default filters shown

Easier Product Creation

Creating products in Magento was always quite a tedious task and somewhat confusing without prior knowledge of attributes, attribute sets and product types. Fortunately product creation in Magento 2 has been reworked to make this process a more streamlined process. Importing product data has also been greatly refined offering a much faster rendering time than previously in Magento 1.

Drag & Drop Images & Product Videos

Magento 2 provides faster product image uploads with a drag & drop functionality, as well as support for easy embed of product video.

Easier URL Rewrites

Resolving SEO & 404 issues are now much more straight-forward in Magento 2 allowing you to simply enter the Request and Target url for a custom redirect. The example below will redirect mysite.com/test-redirect to mysite.com/customer-service.
